Russian Museum, St. Petersburg July
Museum workers have long been regarded as secular saints in Russia, devoted to their work even as they barely subsist on meager wages. Some might joke that museumgoers are viewed the same way, given that security at art institutions remains lax.
A city of exquisite collections of art including some rooms at the Russian Museum that are filled with works of the Russian avant garde from the 1910 through the 20s. Amazing to be in a room of art historical import where over 50% of the work was by women and this was without regard for gender equity--just for excellent work. Natalia Goncharova. Liubov Popova. Alexandra Exter. Varvara Stepanova. Olga Rozanova. They worked across media without restraint or hierarchical concerns.
